Improper diet and lifestyle cause Vata to aggravate, resulting in various disorders including gas. Ayurveda explains five types of air—Prana, Udana, Samana, Vyana, and Apana. Abdominal air is caused by the disturbance of Samana and Apana Vayu. Below are some common causes of gas:
Overeating
Excessive production of bacteria in the stomach
Talking while eating or not chewing food properly.
Excessive formation of acid in the stomach.
Consumption of certain dairy products can also cause gas.
Excessive alcohol consumption

Poor digestion, indigestion, intake of toxic food, constipation, and use of certain medications
Excessive intake of sugary and sorbitol-rich foods
Skipping breakfast or prolonged fasting
Consuming junk food or deep-fried items
Eating stale food
Lack of yoga and exercise in daily routine
Excessive consumption of beans, lentils, and legumes
Preventive Measures for Gas-
To prevent gas after meals or persistent gas problems, it is necessary to bring changes in diet and lifestyle. Here are some preventive measures:
Include Vata-pacifying foods and follow a healthy lifestyle for relief from gas.
Monitor your diet—reduce the intake of beans, cabbage, and onions. Observe which foods cause discomfort and track them in your diet.
Avoid sugary or sorbitol-rich products, sugar-free sweets, and certain medications.
Include yoga and pranayama in your daily routine.
Eat food slowly and chew properly.
Practicing exercises like Pavanmuktasana, Vajrasana, and Ustrasana can help alleviate gas.
Perform Vajrasana after meals to prevent gas formation. This helps improve digestion.
Easy Home Remedies for Gas-
Home remedies are often used to relieve symptoms like abdominal pain and discomfort. Below are some simple and effective remedies:
Black Pepper and Dry Ginger: Mix 1 teaspoon black pepper, 1 teaspoon dry ginger powder, and 1 teaspoon cardamom seeds with ½ teaspoon water. Consume after meals.
Carom Seeds: Mix 1 teaspoon carom seeds with a pinch of salt, add to warm water, and drink for relief.
Harad: Mix Harad powder with honey and consume to alleviate gas.
Black Salt and Carom Seeds: Grind equal parts of carom seeds, cumin, small Harad, and black salt. Take 2 to 6 grams immediately after meals with water.
Other Beneficial Remedies:
Tomatoes: Consuming tomatoes with black salt after meals helps reduce gas.
Black Pepper Tea: Adding black pepper to tea relieves headaches caused by gas.
Ginger and Lemon: Soak ginger slices in lemon juice and consume after meals for relief from gas.
Ayurvedic Remedies for Gas
Ayurvedic treatments are beneficial for gas relief because they are easily available and have minimal side effects.
Lemon Water: Regular consumption of sweet lemon water every morning on an empty stomach helps reduce acidity and bad breath.
