Introduction:
Flaxseed is an extremely beneficial and versatile medicinal plant cultivated in many countries, including India. Its scientific name is Linum usitatissimum, which means “the most useful plant.” This very name signifies how richly endowed this plant is with medicinal and commercial properties.
In India, flax is cultivated in almost every state, but it is considered superior when grown in warm climates. Flax seeds can be found in various colors — white, yellow, red, and black. The seeds yield a highly nutritious oil, and the stems of the plant produce fiber, which is used in textile weaving.

Botanical Description:
Flax is considered a winter crop. It is sown in October–November and matures by February–March. The plant grows about 2 to 4 feet tall with a straight and delicate stem. Its leaves are thin and long, and the flowers are beautiful sky-blue in color.
After blooming, the flowers bear small, round, and hard fruits that ripen by February–March. These dry up and are ready for seed extraction.
Chemical Composition:
Flaxseeds are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, lignans, soluble and insoluble fiber, protein, and various vitamins (like B1, B6) and minerals (magnesium, calcium, zinc, phosphorus).
They contain a high amount of antioxidants, which help strengthen the body’s immune system and fight diseases.
